Creating Concertina One
My art practice is process led. It is a process of adding and erasing, adding and erasing…until it feels complete. I am responding to my inner landscape. I am exploring and leaning into my inner world with gestural mark making, cutting and pasting, forms, edges and washes.
This Limited Edition series (Concertina One) has sprung from working in a small concertina book. Led by the process of tuning into my internal world by making marks and responding to them, this book became an expression of my internal journey of initiating myself into boldness. The Cauldron was the starting point of this initiation. I worked on the book for 12 months, coming and going with it. I was constantly in the unknown with it. I have just begun working on my second concertina book (look out for a new Limited Edition series of prints later in 2026!) and I am reminded of how uncomfortable it is to turn up to the pages and not know what comes next. Somehow I arrive at a knowing and satisfaction that something has been resolved.
Concertina One was an initiation into boldness because my business as a therapeutic practitioner needs me to be visible and brave. As a practitioner these qualities come into my sessions with ease and flow. I take risks, I trust myself, I attune to my client and support them to trust the unknown process unfolding in front of us. We alchemize mystery with a gentle presence and a splash of play.
As a business lady, being visible and clear in order to communicate what I offer is a different story. Speaking my offerings which come from deep embodied places comes easier if I can show you rather than creating marketing content or trying to bring awareness to an expressive arts therapist scope of practice. So I called in boldness and began working in Concertina One. And of course, while trying to step towards something, I encountered the shadowy watery ways while getting there.
My major learning from Concertina One is that boldness comes from taking a step…any step…and see what happens. I am learning more about how to be with the discomfort of the unknown; and how this is actually the antidote to anxiety, fear and being seen - all ingredients I encountered in my initiation into boldness. Boldness will of course always be a work in progress. But the process has birthed this Limited Edition print series which I am so excited to offer you.
The scanning and reproduction process opened up another creative process resulting in new compositions. The nature of the concertina book allows for blurred endings and beginnings. New works emerged in the reproduction process by using the folds in the book as new compositional elements or by rotating images until they spoke their new home.
These prints are Giclee prints on cotton rag with deckled (torn) edges. They come in A5, A4 and A1. I dare you to go big with these prints! The scan quality is AMAZING and they are yearning to be big and bold on your walls in your life.
